چکیده

We have calculated the thermal emission spectrum of the dust of comet P/Borrelly (1994l), a short-period comet (Jupiter family), from 3 μm to 14 μm as well as the 10 μm silicate feature in terms of the comet dust model as porous aggregates of interstellar grains. Compared to comet P/Halley dust, the dust grains of P/Borrelly appear to be relatively more processed (more carbonized), less fluffy, and richer in smaller particles. The fluffy aggregate model of silicate core-amorphous carbon mantle grains with a porosity P = 0.85 can match the observational data. To generalize the dust properties of shortperiod comets, systematic observations of the thermal emission spectra and the silicate features for a large set of samples are needed.

All comets are born equal ] infrared emission by dust as a key to comet nucleus composition 0

The infrared emission of various comets can be matched within the framework that all comets are made of aggregated interstellar dust[ This is demonstrated by comparing results on Halley "a periodic comet#\ Borrelly "a Jupiter family short period comet#\ HaleÐ Bopp "a long period comet#\ and extra!solar comets in the b Pictoris disk[ Attempts have been made to generalize the chemical composition...

Telescope observations of the nucleus and inner coma of comet 19 P / 1904 Y 2 ( Borrelly ) ?

The nucleus of comet 19P/Borrelly was detected using the Planetary Camera (WFPC2) of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). During the time of our observations, the comet was 0.62 AU from the Earth, 1.40 AU from the Sun, and had a solar phase angle of 38◦. The high spatial resolution of the HST images allowed us to discriminate clearly between the signal from the nucleus and that from the coma. The ...

Formation of jets in Comet 19P/Borrelly by subsurface geysers

Observations of the inner coma of Comet 19P/Borrelly with the camera on the Deep Space 1 spacecraft revealed several highly collimated dust jets emanating from the nucleus. The observed jets can be produced by acceleration of evolved gas from a subsurface cavity through a narrow orifice to the surface. As long as the cavity is larger than the orifice, the pressure in the cavity will be greater ...

A McDonald Observatory Study of Comet 19P/Borrelly: Placing the DeepSpace 1 Observations into a Broader Context

We present imaging and spectroscopic data on comet 19P/Borrelly that were obtained around the time of the Deep Space 1 encounter and in subsequent months. In the four months after perihelion, the comet showed a strong primary (sunward) jet that is aligned with the nucleus’ spin axis. A weaker secondary jet on the opposite hemisphere appeared to became active around the end of 2001, when the pri...

Tomography of a sunward structure in the dust tail of comet 19P/Borrelly

The observed orientations of a sunward structure (SS) in the dust tail of comet 19P/Borrelly, as it appears in 20 images taken under different projection conditions over a period of 142 days, are compared with the theoretical orientations computed on the basis of two different models: the Spin Model, in which the SS is assumed to be a linear dust jet from an active source close to the cometary ...
